They were all American built passenger car rear wheel drive models, and though they were on the cutting edge of technology for their time, they seem primitive today. Now, automatic transmissions and transaxles are used in both cars and trucks, they're built all over the world, and often are operated electronically by onboard computers. Standard transmissions have also become increasingly complex. In 1952 most standard transmissions were three speeds with no synchromesh in low gear. Four and five speeds were non synchronized units used only in trucks.
